Tendon Repair Surgery
A tendon repair surgery is performed to bring back normal movement of a joint which has become damaged due to injury. Tendon injury can occur anywhere in the body however the most common are in the shoulder, elbows, ankles, fingers and knees. Tendon damage can also occur in patients suffering with rheumatoid arthritis which is an inflammatory disease of the joints.
How is Tendon Repair Surgery Performed?
During a tendon repair surgery a small incision is made into the skin over the damaged tendon. The damaged tendon is then sewed back together and the surrounding tissue is checked to see if any other injuries have occurred, such as injury to the nerves or blood vessels. If there isn’t enough healthy tissue for the tendon to be repaired, the surgeon may perform a tendon graft which uses a replacement tendon to repair the area.
