ACL Reconstruction Ligaments UK Supplier

ACL reconstruction is surgery to replace a torn anterior cruciate ligament, a major bond in the knee. During surgery, an ACL ligament from a donor is often needed to effectively replace the exisiting torn ligament. At Lindare Medical we can supply sterilised tendons and ligaments to accommodate ACL reconstruction surgery across the UK. We can also provide a same day delivery service of fresh frozen tendons to both the NHS and private hospital sector upon request.

ACL Reconstruction Surgery

ACL injuries are one of the most common types of knee injuries. They are often caused during sports that involve sudden stop and start motions like football, basketball and volleyball. However they can also tear if the lower leg extends or twists forwards too much, so in some instances the tear can be un-sport related.

The ACL can be reconstructed by removing what remains of the torn ligament and replacing it with a tendon from either another area of the leg such as the hamstring or it can be taken from a donor. Tissue taken from a donor is called an allograft.

Types of tissue that could replace the ACL:

Patellar tendon – The tendon running from the bottom of the kneecap (patella) to the top of the shin bone (tibia) at the front of the knee

Hamstring tendons – these run from the back of the knee on the inner side, all the way up to the thigh

Quadriceps tendon – the tendon that attaches the patella to the quadriceps muscle, which is the large muscle on the front of the thigh.

Allograft (donor tissue) – this could be the patellar tendon or Achilles tendon (the tendon that attaches the back of the heel to the calf muscle) from a donor

Synthetic (artificial) graft – A tubular structure designed to replace a torn ligament

Whichever form of graft tissue is used, it will be removed and cut to the correct size. It will then be positioned in the knee and fixed to the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia).
