Spinal Fusion Surgery
Spinal fusion surgery is a procedure used to correct problems with the small bones in the spine. It is quite simply a ‘welding’ process in which two or more vertebrae are fused together so that they heal in a single, solid bone. This technique is done to restore stability to the spine and eliminate painful motion.

How is Spinal Fusion Surgery performed?
Spinal fusion has been performed for decades and there are a number of different techniques that may be used to fuse the spine. There are also different ‘approaches’ the surgeon can use to perform the procedure.
The anterior approach requires a small incision in the lower abdomen for a lumbar fusion or in the front of the neck for a cervical fusion. A lateral approach is when the surgeon approaches the spine from the side, and a posterior approach is performed from the back of the patient.
All spinal fusion procedures use some type of bone material (aka bone graft) to help promote the fusion. The bone comes in small fragments and pieces which are placed into the space between the vertebra to be fused. This fused bone then stimulates and triggers the rest of the bone to heal to create one solid bone.
If the patient is undergoing a decompression procedure, the surgeon may harvest bone from the site of the decompression and use it for the graft. Alternatively, harvested bone from donated cadavers can be used and can be purchased directly from bone banks (including us!).
